I. The Fiesta Bowl

1. A football game is a lot like a speech. How you prepare in the months, weeks, and days before a game, is as important as the game/speech itself. Look at The Ohio State Football Team.
In August Coach Tressel asked his players to drive themselves to a farm. Note a team bus was not used. They were asked to make the commitment to get there, on their own. At the farm they were able to see their coach, whom they thought could do ANYTHING, fail at driving a huge tractor.
They saw Maurice Clarrett use teammates as a shield against killer pigs. This experience helped the players think and bond like a team. Each player grew their own magnetic field. Important in two overtimes?

2. Known for his straight-laced look and behavior, Coach Tressel made a promise to the team.
Go undefeated and he would CORNROW his hair. In your business, rewards have to be what your people would work toward attaining.

3. Accepting the National Championship, his first comment to an international television audience,
“We always knew we had the best damn band in the land,” . . . There is no limit to what you can achieve when you are willing to share the credit. Building his magnetic field?

II. The Golden Globe Awards

In making a speech or presenting to a client always ask yourself: WHY ME? Then your demeanor and your words need to answer why you should be believed or selected. However, here’s a twist.
When Richard Gere won for the movie Chicago, a man known more for his arrogance than humility said:

I never win anything. (Why me?)
Nicholas Cage usually wins these things. (Why me?)
He then went on to say that his wife prepared a list of people
he needed to remember to thank.
Arrogant American Gigilo becomes Humble Dutiful Husband.
By asking WHY ME, he appeared humble rather than arrogant.

Has he grown his magnetic field?

III. The Super Bowl

Before The Super Bowl I knew 3 things about John Gruden. I knew he came from coaching the Oakland Raiders, I knew it was his first year in Tampa, and I knew he looked 12. After the game I learned the most important thing, he was gracious. And in being gracious he brings people into his magnetic field. In his brief comments after the game, he thanked the coach who he replaced! Imagine for a moment, taking your time in front of a world audience, to name and thank your predecessor.
Growing his magnetic field?

IV. The State of The Union

A State of the Union is an INFORMATIVE speech rather than a PERSUASIVE  speech. A declaration of war would be a persuasive speech. A persuasive speech is a CALL FOR ACTION. To call for action the audience must have facts and information. For example, telling us that we must do something about Iraq because of testimony from those imprisoned but not telling us what the testimony was… Telling us they have gathered evidence of secret weapons but not telling us what the evidence is . . . Look for more facts in a declaration of war: a persuasive speech. Bush will keep working on expanding his magnetic field TO BUILD his American and International support.

V. Laci Peterson

Where is Laci Peterson? The very pregnant Modesto woman missing since CHRISTMAS DAY.
When her husband, Scott, talked to the media for the first time on the national audience looked at what  he looked like while answering questions.

How did he look saying it? Audience reports cited poor eye contact which makes the speaker look untrustworthy. Remember the famous Kennedy-Nixon debates? Scott Peterson’s magnetic field is shrinking as family members withdraw their support.
