I. Herbie's Helpful Hint (named after my Dad)

My Dad used to say a true champion comes behind. Hence, I learned to never leave a game early. Even if it is a Browns game in January in Cleveland, even if it is below 0, and even if there is a double overtime, I don't leave. I don't leave literally if I am fortunate enough to go to a game, and if the game is on TV, I don't change channels. My Dad also meant that a true champion plays past the last minute of the game, in sports and life.

Lesson Learned:

During the early games of the NBA Finals, some people told me that they changed channels early in the game. It's the finish line that tells you who the winner is not the starting gate. The blogosphere lit up with conversations about quitting. In Game 6 Dirk (now the best known 4 letters around the world) had a horrible shooting night. But he kept shooting. He didn't disappear, he did not become invisible.

II. Who Said It?

"Do not the most moving moments of our lives find us without words?"

III. Mishmash of Value:

1. I Know a Movie Star

Three years ago Moshe and I were in Paris to visit his family. I was in a small dress boutique -what a surprise-that had a Poodle -what a surprise-named Romeo. Every visit I looked forward to going to this store, seeing Romeo and the two "older" sisters who owned it, and of course the clothes. Anyone remember my polka dot jacket?

On this visit, one sister asked us to meet her actor son. I think she got Moshe confused with Steven Spielberg. He came to meet us on his Vespa. Daniel Lundh was hot, really hot.  Moshe, Daniel, and I went to Cafe Angelina for their famous hot chocolate. Daniel Lundh is a French actor who speaks fluent English. He is in the new Woody Allen movie, Midnight in Paris.

Lesson Learned:

Who would think I know a movie star??? And who would think you would know someone who knew a movie star? We happened to be in this boutique and of course said YES to meet the owner's son. Why not? It was an opportunity and a couple hours of our time. The lesson is, we never know. That applies to every event we attend, or don't attend, every lead we don't follow up, every opportunity.

2. Wisdom from a Washington Cabbie

In D.C. for a recent conference, we took a cab back from "the Hill". I asked the cabbie about the onslaught of summer tourism to the nation's capitol. He said, "tourists don't take cabs".

Lesson Learned:

He knew his market. His market was local business people. He did not plan on nor did he expect an increase in summer fares. Do you know your own market? Do you know who is paying your fare?

3. What OPI Sales Strategy Can Teach Us

OPI nail polish came out with a new product called SHATTER. You put it over your color of polish and it is supposed to have a "shattered" effect. This product goes over the polish which goes over the base coat and under the top coat. So now this makes four, four products that we purchase for one nail.

Lesson Learned:

There are two ways to increase sales in any industry: sell more products to your existing client base or get more clients. Their strategy was genius. They gave their own market an additional product to buy. How can you sell more product, ideas, or services to your current client base?

4. Why are Smart People So Stupid?

Mark Sanford thought he could go to Brazil unnoticed. Jim Tressel didn't realize an email is permanent, Elliot Spitzer outlawed sex and then was caught in a sex scandal, Schwarzenegger thought he could hide a love child forever, Brett Farve sexted a reporter, and now we have Weiner-gate.

Lesson Learned:

Social media is print media. An email is like snail mail: emails are not written in invisible ink. Never never ever send an email, a Facebook message, a Tweet, anything, that you could not live with today and twenty years from now. The same rule applies to voice mail. Your reputation is permanent and so is all communication.

5. The L Word and Gen Y

In Cleveland he blamed his teammates, owner, the fans were too spoiled; he blamed every one other than himself. And now that he has taken his talents to South Beach, he still has not taken ownership of his actions or inactions. Magic Johnson called out this generation of players for not accepting coaching from their coaches. He said they see coaching as criticism: what LeBron needs to do is watch game film to see the bad decisions he made. Then ask every team member, every former player, what can he do. What can he do to be better? Then spend the summer becoming better. But he doesn't think he will.

Lesson Learned:

Magic and other former players turned analysts identified only two Gen Y players that they thought were introspective, would turn inward to look for answers and assign responsibility. This is an issue Gen Y will struggle with whether on the court or on your payroll. If you don't provide and insist on "the honest mirror" your Gen Y's will not reach their potential either.

Case Study – First Republican Rumble

What: The first debate between seven Presidential Republican candidates took place on Monday night. Each candidate had the goal and the challenge to stand out in a field largely unknown to many constituents. The GOP usually likes the candidate from the previous election: an additional challenge for those fighting for campaign air.

How: Names with little name recognition went toe-to-toe with GOP frontrunner Romney. The moderator warned the candidates to answer the question asked, not the question they wish was asked. They were admonished to be brief.  Americans posed the questions around the country. The design of the podium made each candidate look like they were standing behind a fence.

Results: In communication and in this debate the goal is to stand out. It's a challenge for white guys who look a lot alike. Pawlenty had the opportunity to take on Romney and ducked the fight. Romney kept the focus on Obama rather than the other contenders. Gingrich has to get in shape for the marathon of a presidential race. For a while it became a contest of who had more children and grandchildren. Bachman and her 23 foster children won that contest. Round 1 to Romney.
