I. Herbie's Helpful Hint (named after my Dad)
McCain's Concession Speech

My Dad used to say that if you are going to capitulate, going to concede, give-in, or apologize: do it quickly and do it gracefully. He believed that it had more impact sooner than later.

From a communication standpoint, I believe that McCain's concession speech was his finest of this long election season. It was the best of MAC, it was sincere, gracious, it was uniting, it was moving. Gone from this speech were the cynicism, anger, and pettiness of the campaign trail. I truly hope it is this speech he will be remembered for, because like another veteran, my Dad, he conceded quickly and graciously. It would be a fitting legacy for this man who, regardless of your party, dedicated his entire adult life to this country.

II. Who Said It?

"Rosa Parks sat so Martin Luther King could walk. Martin Luther King walked so Obama could run. Obama ran so America could fly"

III. Mishmash of Value:

1. Do You Have an Inauguration in Your Future?

An inauguration has been defined as a ceremony whereby an individual assumes an office or position of authority or power. Is there an office or a position that you aspire to hold? If we look at the word inauguration as the formal beginning or initiation of any movement or course of action, then we all have inaugurations to look forward to in our own lives.

Lesson Learned:

Abraham Lincoln sought help to deliver the right message in his inaugural address. Lincoln sent drafts of his speech to his closest political advisers for feedback. All eight pages of Washington's speech were written in his own clear and distinctive handwriting. For even the most famous, writing is both a grueling and collaborative effort.

2. Missy Up-Date -- Is it a Dog's World?

Thank you to all of you who expressed concern for my Missy and our recent journey through emergency spinal surgery and rehab. We are very fortunate in Northeastern Ohio to have a neurological practice at Metro Veterinary Hospital. Shout out to Dr. Axlund, Metro, and Dancing Paws physical therapy, our new favorite place to hang out.

You haven't seen anything until you see a dog on an underwater treadmill! Missy is walking again, although shaky and unable to climb steps ever again.

Lesson Learned:

Hang on for tomorrow, it will get better. Life is never the same, you learn a new definition of "normal", surgeons are gods, and money is made to be spent!

3. I Hear Your Voice

Obama's acceptance speech was very reminiscent of JFK's Inaugural address, in its vision and message of hope and hard work. "From parliaments and palaces, dawn of a new leadership is at hand, to those that will tear the world down, we will defeat you, not from the might of our sword, the enduring life of our ideals".

The speech quieted down the massive crowd rather than revved them up. The music regal rather than rap. I think I will remember most the tears, Jesse Jackson's face wet with them, Oprah's tears, students in Atlanta, congregants at Ebenezer Baptist church, truly a rainbow of color and age.

Lesson Learned:

Whatever your party affiliation, whomever was your favorite candidate, one thing that Obama has shown the world is the power of rhetoric, persuasive speaking. Humans are the only species who were given the gift of speech. I believe all species communicate, but only humans were given this gift. You have this gift, do you use it effectively? Do you have a vision, share a vision, use language to create the buy-in you need to move forward?

4. A Real Life Example of Marketing Excellence

We were both anxious and excited to go to our first physical therapy session. Doggy therapy comes with soothing music and a waterfall. Missy's first foray into the water tank was exciting and scary.

Lesson Learned:

Two days after our first visit to therapy, an envelope arrived in the mail. On the back of the envelope was a sticker paw print, and Missy spelled out in individual stickers. The note was from the therapy group, written from my dog's perspective, thanking me for taking her to get help. After receiving this letter, do you think I would even think of not continuing her therapy? How can you market yourself so clients would not even think of discontinuing their association with you?

5. Sunrise, Florida

Obama's "Obama-mercial ended in Sunrise, Florida. I hardly think it was coincidental, do you? His logo is a sunrise. Every detail was planned to support a message.

Lesson Learned:

In your presentations and your presence, do you take advantage of every possible detail?

IV. Case Study: Unemployed and on the Interview Circuit

Situation: CEO asked to speak to college undergraduate and graduate students.

Process: He sat with me for a couple of hours. Then his work was done. I sat with his comments and a roadmap of where I wanted this speech to end up, a bag of bagel chips, a dog recently out of surgery, and hours to go to reach destination GREAT SPEECH.

Result: This CEO was able to take the burden of this speech off of his shoulders and his plate. He has a great speech, that is truly written in his voice. He and his company will bask in the spotlight for the duration of this speech and long after.
