I Woke Up to Governor Cuomo and I Went to Bed with Him

Early yesterday Gov. Cuomo was on a morning talk show.  He was on another cable show in the 10pm time slot. So you could say I got up with him and I went to bed with him.

The reason this is important is that leadership is 24/7. It’s not something one can do once a day or once a week. It’s not just a press conference. Leadership is building that web of communication with as many threads as possible.

Last week Dr. Fauci did a 35 minute interview with Steph Curry. Yes, that Steph Curry. NBA Steph Curry. What a brilliant idea on YouTube’s part.  An interview with Steph Curry is another thread in that web. Think of the people who heard that interview that don’t listen to a network or a cable show.

Lilly Singh, host of NBC’s “A Little Late with Lilly Singh,” hosted Dr. Fauci for another audience to hear from the medical expert. Another thread in the web of communication making for really long days.

It’s a two-parter. Visibility is huge. You have to have the ability to stand out in a positive way when you get the visibility. Many people thought, and voted in the last presidential election that experience in government was not an important attribute for a presidential candidate. When you listen to Gov.Cuomo, who has been Attorney General, Secretary of HUD, and a 3 term governor, it is comforting to hear expertise talk.

The Supreme Court once said of pornography, you know it when you see it. We can say the same thing about leadership. A client’s 84 year old mother heard Gov Cuomo and said, “Why isn’t he president?”
